Island of Power
Published in Digital by Warner Books ()
Average review score:

A great bookA great book. I personally am not into the series of these books but I thought this was excellent. It's about this alien island that appears off the coast of Oregon. Sent to investigate is a team of scientists and a platoon of soldiers. But when they get there they find an abandoned alien city and the walking dead that are trying to kill these soldiers. An excellent book, one of the only ones I ever wanted to read again.

The Island of Staffa: Home of the World-renowned Fingal's Cave (Island Tributes)
Published in Paperback by Romsey Fine Art (June, 1993)
Average review score:

Magnificent Representation of a Very Special PlaceIllustrated with a delightful assortment of sketches, photographs, prints, engravings, and historical paintings, this booklet provides the reader with an aesthetic experience rarely found in a guidebook. Its scope is wide, from information on the geological and natural history to practical matters of accessing the island. As an added treat, literary and musical references are cited which were the result of visits to Fingal's Cave - agreeably one of nature's wonders. I was especially excited to see information on the long discontinued King George V day-steamer which I took many decades ago; it was unable to stop at Fingal's Cave due to the swells. Recently, while on a pilgrimage to Iona, I was able to make this long awaited trip. Being able to read the guide beforehand made the experience exceptionally meaningful and having it as a souvenir of my visit to the island makes it a treasure that I re-visit time and again. A quality presentation with an artistic flair. Recommended for anyone who anticipates a visit to Staffa or who would like specialized information on this unique site.

Island of the Blue Dolphins
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Yearling (December, 1996)
Average review score:

Island of the Blue Dolphins - A Story of CourageIsland of the Blue Dolphins is a historical fiction that takes place on island of the southwest coast of California in the year 1853. The main character, Karana, is a native of the village of "Ghalas-At" and has been stranded on an island after attempting to save her younger brother, Ramo. After the two are left to survive on their skills and wits, Karana finds her brother attacked by wild dogs and killed. At 12 years old, Karana is truly alone and manages to find food, build a shelter and protect herself against Aleut hunters, wild dogs and nature's worst weather. The story is told from the point of view of Karana and is filled with figurative language that is simple and profound. It is a story of courage, survival and endurance and demonstrates how it is in the very essence of human nature to forgive one's enemies and strive for happiness.

"A unbelievable, historical and unforgettable story."This story was intriging and interesting to me because it is based facts about an Indian girl named Karana. Karana, who spent 18 years alone on a island off the coast of California in the early 1800's. I admire her courage while waiting year after year for a ship to come and take her away. Her faith was amazing!, her story of survival was unbelievable! Once I started reading Island of the Blue Dolphins, I had a hard time putting it down!

The Island of the Dead
Published in Hardcover by University of Georgia Press (October, 1986)
Average review score:

LYA LUFT ROCKS!Lya Luft is a little known, but terrific author. I was introduced to her works in a Women of Brazil class led by an astounding proff. P. Sharpe. Since then, I have read anything and everything by Luft that I could get my hands on. Island of the Dead still seems to me her most powerful work, maybe because it was the first one I read, but... In 150 pages, Lya Luft manages to put so much about human relationships, about love, about woman's struggle in the world of societal pressures, it's nothing short of miraculous. Very gothic and alluring, and absolutely a must read!

The Island of the Grass King: The Further Adventures of Anatole
Published in Paperback by Harcourt Paperbacks (November, 1985)
Average review score:

I was lost in the story!I got this book from my local library, and I wasn't exactly sure I would like it. After I had read it, it became one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITES! I very much enjoyed the fact that Plumpet, the cat, could talk, and that Suzanna was made of glass. I think that the book is great also, because Anatole goes on the journey to the Island of Sychorax so his grandma can get rid of her asthma. It shows how kind some people can be.This book made me feel like I was there, and I enjoy imagining I'm there, so it was a great book. I think Nancy Willard is a great author.

Island of the Great Yellow Ox
Published in Paperback by Aladdin Library (June, 1993)
Average review score:

island of the great yellow oxThe plot is foremost in this action-packed tale about four boys marooned on an island off the coast of Ireland. Also on the island is a famous hidden treasure, the golden ox god of the Druids and a thoroughly nasty villain who will stop at nothing to get it. What makes this otherwise predictable story memorable is the woman's husband, a weak-willed alcoholic who is ironically nicknamed "The Captain." He is the one who carries out his wife's cold-hearted decrees, first imprisoning the plucky boys, then forcing them to excavate the tomb of the Druids, and finally sealing them there alive. Readers witness the struggle between the man's residual decency to his powerful wife. First published in England in 1966, the story relies heavily on conventions of the adventure genre, but achieves its thrills through suspense rather than gore. In the end, the boys triumph, just as readers happily suspected they would from the first scary moment. I personaly recomend that due to least complexed sentences that this is the perfect book for little children.

Island PrinceIf you are an island lover, and especially if you have ever traveled in the Pacific Islands, you will really enjoy this short, fast moving novel. It moves along rapidly and keeps you turning the pages. And, if you are a romantic, you will enjoy the romantic flavor as well. Great reminiscence for Peace Corp or military folks who have traveled through Micronesia.
